Nov 3: Drove to Seattle (pic)

- Changed a parameter in the DMOC
- Got it running! (thanks to Matt, Tim, and Beth)
- Drove it and weighed it
- Gave rides to friends
Rereading the manual for directions.
The motor actually turns now.
Pretty cool. The laptop is hooked up to the controller by a cable I ran through one of the old heater core hose holes in the firewall (just temporally). The computer then can display the motor RPM, the pedal position, the requested motor torque, among other things. It's pretty advanced! You can also use the laptop to change the parameters in the DMOC controller, which then modifies the performance of the vehicle, and which we had to do to get it working.
It left the garage under its own power. My first drive in an EV!
Yep, a few batteries.
I'm heading to Seattle tomorrow in my new racer.
We went by my dads to give him a ride too.
My dad and I driving off.
And returning.
We can't drive far, as we have no charger, even though John and Julie payed for one in the middle of August. Again, I would not recommend doing business with ElectroAutomotive. We have actually now ordered a different charger from a guy outside of Seattle, who seems to make a real good product and said he will have it finished in 10-20 days.
John drove his new car too, I just didn't get a photo of it.

And a piece that is absolutely essential for the success of the project.
I painted my car to amuse myself, and my dad and I went to a Halloween party.

- Installed new vent pipe on new water heater
Uploading pictures onto the internet and emailing ElectroAutomotive about lacking parts. Wouldn't recommend doing business with them, unless you have forever to wait.
Got the new vent pipe installed on my dad's new water heater. Looks good.
The following picture is the pair of 90's I added to the pipes. The pipes had been forced into an angled connection, which finally started leaking. The connections are no longer under stress. And, if you look back at the prior pictures, you will notice that the burn marks on the joist were there before I started working on the tank (though, I have charred wood other times when sweat soldering, just not this time).
Saturday, September 29, 2007
Sept 29: Water Heater (pic)
- Replaced my dad's old water heater
- Relaxed, and drank a few beers with my dad
Notice, in the following picture, that the pipes go up to a T that is leaking. The soldered connection has gone bad, as there is stress on the connection. The pipe to the right is inches above the connection to the left. This will have to be remedied.
The new connections and new valve.
Section cut out and a 90 added.
For some reason I didn't take a picture of the finished product. You can see some pictures on the next page, though.

Inital Project Planning (pic)
There are none that are available. A RAV4 was sold on ebay awhile ago, that is a vehicle that can go 100+, but you can't get them. The Tesla would work too, and be quite stylish, but it is $100,000 and could not be had for over a year. The Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEV) cannot do the highway speeds required. The only viable option was a home conversion. After many conversations, it was decided there was a good chance we could do it, hence the EV conversion project.
The EV conversion project was planned over the summer of 2007. I was to do the planning, most of the legwork, and John and I would do the build. Julie and John were going to put up the funds, and own and use the vehicle in the end. It was decided to convert a Toyota Xtracab pickup into a long range EV by removing the internal combustion engine (ICE) components and adding a technologically advanced 3-phase AC motor and 40 lead-acid golf cart batteries. I was in the Peace Corps in Kenya a few years ago, where I gained great respect for the structural strength of Toyota pickups! Twenty people (me being one, at times) are regularly stuffed in the back of the already loaded Matau just like the one pictured below... our batteries will weigh less!
A 1990 Toyota was found and bought, and all major parts and batteries were purchased in the summer. The parts were scheduled to arrive in September, and the installation and conversion was to take place in Montana over the month of September.

Introduction
An initial disclaimer, though...
I am creating this blog 7 weeks into the project, in November 2007, as we are presently waiting for parts. Consequently, the dates of the posts are not accurate. I will simply backdate the posts to make them correspond to the event depicted and described.
Also, for now, I will just hyperlink most of the build pictures, as I have already uploaded them onto flickr. Just click on the "Flickr slideshow" on each post. After you open a linked slideshow, you can select "options" on the bottom right, then select "always show title and descriptions". I labeled most of the pictures, so if you select this, you will get a little information about each photo.
Anyway, enjoy, and here it goes...
